4 Team Building Activities Based on Cooperation and Teamwork

The exercises used to build a team should be tailored to the needs of the group as well as the expectations of the leader/manager. We will be presenting four training activities to help your team communicate, trust and cooperate with each other as well as its leader.

1. Personal Shield

This icebreaker is for people who aren’t yet acquainted with one another and aims to foster communication. Each participant receives an A4 piece of paper, crayons, or colored pens to help him/her draw three things that he/she enjoys doing in their spare time, three goals, three people he/she admires, and three places he/she would love to visit. These elements must be drawn, not written. The team must also choose a phrase they feel best represents them, their personal motto. Each person must describe their personal shield after they have completed the drawing. The drawings can be displayed in the room for everyone to admire during team building.

2. Trust fall

This activity promotes trust and makes it easier to get along with your team. Participants form a circle that is close enough to each other, so they don’t leave any space between them. From 7 to 10 people can develop a process. One person will be in the center of the circle with his/her eyes closed and hands crossed to the chest. Once he/she is comfortable, the person will be able to fall on any side without moving their hands or feet. He/she will be caught by the members of the circle and returned to their original positions. Each member of the process will have a turn being in the middle and then letting go.

3. Silence is golden

This training exercise aims to foster cooperation and teamwork. For this exercise, you will need a flipchart and colored markers. Each team should consist of 5-6 people. Each unit is allowed to use the flipchart for 10 minutes to create their ideal workplace, regardless of the cost. They cannot speak during the training exercises. They may be allowed to use extra paper to communicate with team members, but they cannot talk. Each team will then explain their design after a period of 10 minutes. Each group should pay attention to any similarities in the drawings. The trainer will then discuss the communication barriers that were created between them.

4. Labels

This team-building activity aims to foster appreciation and support between team members. Each team should prepare a set of 6 labels before the training exercise. This will allow each team to have six members. You can put instructions on the labels such as “ignore”, “respect me”, and “laugh at my opinions”, or simply adjectives like “arrogant”, helpful”, leader, defensive, etc. Without reading the label, each member will place a tag on the forehand of the person in front of him/her. Each team will be assigned a task by the trainer, such as organizing a Christmas party or conducting a departmental meeting. Participants will be expected to respect labels placed on the foreheads of their teammates. You can stop the exercise after 7 minutes and start debriefing. You should be focused on the outcome of this task, their reactions towards labels, and their feelings.
